Love$ick – Mura Masa, A$AP Rocky
I wanna do something like this with one of my original tunes. It’s hard cos they are always singer-songwriter vibes simply because that’s how I write them (me and my classical guitar). A good way for me to break out of this would be to pick one of my originals, have it front and center in my mind and start experimenting with beats, harmonic instruments (synths, strings) and little samples (even just what’s available in Logic Pro). I feel limited by the instruments I am able to play and own but I’ve always wanted to branch out into RnB, hiphop and electronic genres.
Here are a couple of drum tracks I was experimenting with this week. I’ve picked my song to focus on, its called Explain me. Here’s the simple demo recording I took on my iPhone…
Here are a couple of drum patterns I was experimenting with this week for this tune… I would pick a fun sounding kit, get musical typing up, hit record and see what happened.
Test 1

I like that this one has some sampled sounds. This would need to be quantised a bit as it’s not the tightest timing but I really like the sounds and RnB feel.
Test 2

I think this one is hilarious. Super grimy! Might be relevant for a breakdown moment but not appropriate for most of the track…
Test 3
Here I used one of the Drummer presets. I added more kicks, snares and claps. I think this pattern would work for more mellow parts of the song, like a verse or any breaks.
I’m not stoked with any of these experiments, to be honest. Might have to find a different track…
