Sampling

I really enjoyed looking at sampling this week! I would love to experiment with some sampling in my final project. I think it’s a really exciting take on an art form that is essentially regurgitating sounds into new arrangements.

We discussed a lot of the ethicalities of this production process. Is it legal? Is it moral? Is it innovative? Is it an artform? Ultimately, sampling was designed to be revolutionary, not to steal. It introduces a new type of instrument for music making, like, for example, the Fairlight CMI – the first commercial sampler.

Some examples that I like, of sampling:

  • Ooh Wee by Mark Ronson and Ghostface Killah feat. Nate Dogg, Trife and Saigon sampled two tracks to create this banger. The drums are borrowed from Dennis Coffrey’s Son of Scorpio and the riff from Sunny by Boney M. is slowed down in this track but also used as a sort of riff.
  • The Halluci Nation sample Indigenous North American music such as traditional drumming and singing groups in their unique interpretation of Pow Wow music and EDM; Electric Pow Wow. All of their tunes are really impressive!
