How to Mix

When we talked about defining mixing in week 6 this is the definition I got:

Strategy for fitting the right things in the right way for the desired effect. How hard should I hit with this and where should it sit?

Sounds pretty important to me but how do I go about it…?

Key things that I learnt this week (week 9):

  • Order of mix adjustments doesn’t matter. I could put the punchiest track up front, eg the vocals
  • Don’t focus on one thing for too long, dance around your project to keep perspective
  • If I make a big change and it feels good a nice rule of thumb is try half the amount of that change and leave it for a while
  • If there is dead space in the EQ, we can’t put in there what doesn’t already exist. If I don’t like it, I may just have to re-record differently.
  • When mixing MIDI tracks, save it to audio first.
  • REMEMBER the relativity of a solo track and the whole mix, keep switching between them.

Now for something a struggle with: COMPRESSION
–> Threshold is the line in the sand for volume – cross this line and the sound will be squashed.
–> Attack is how quickly this happens and Release is how long it happens for.
–> Makeup is how much we are turning it up or not.

Here’s a quick exercise for me to consolidate this:

Unprocessed file
Compression added to make it less heavy on the ears.
